A number of the most esteemed figures within the historical past of France, together with Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Simone Veil, are interred within the Panthéon in Paris. And now a brand new spirit will be a part of them: an entertainer, activist, and agent of the French resistance.

Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis in 1906, started performing in her teenagers, and moved to Paris.

“I simply could not stand America, and I used to be one of many first coloured People to maneuver to Paris,” she instructed The Guardian in 1974.

This group included Richard Wright and James Baldwin, who weren’t starry-eyed about Paris and France’s self-proclaimed beliefs of liberty, equality, and fraternity a lot as clear-eyed about life for Black folks in the USA.

“I did not know what was going to occur to me in France,” Baldwin instructed The Paris Evaluate in 1984. “However I knew what was going to occur to me in New York.”

Baker turned a sensation in Paris. She was the primary Black girl to star in a significant movement image — the 1927 French movie Siren of the Tropics. She dazzled on the Folies Bergère, the place she danced in a skirt made from synthetic bananas.

“When she swung onstage in that fiercely swinging banana skirt,” Morgan Jerkins wrote in Vogue in 2016, “Baker brilliantly manipulated the white male creativeness … she clowned and seduced and subverted stereotypes.”

Beyoncé herself saluted Baker’s one hundredth birthday by acting on TV in a banana skirt.

Throughout World Battle II, some French stars carried out for occupying German troops. Baker hid refugees and weapons for the French Resistance in her chateau in Dordogne. She gathered intelligence and carried secret messages written on sheet music in invisible ink. She acquired France’s Legion of Honor after the warfare and have become an advocate for civil rights in the USA, refusing to carry out for segregated audiences. She spoke simply earlier than Martin Luther King Jr. on the 1963 March on Washington, sporting the uniform of the Free French Forces.

Baker died in 1975. She would be the first Black woman in what’s known as France’s corridor of heroes. And it is likely to be good to recall this week that Baker was additionally an immigrant who labored bravely and tirelessly to rescue and defend refugees from concern and oppression when their lives relied on her braveness.
