Re “Rising theft of catalytic converters is criminal“ (Sept. 16): The catalytic converter of my older mannequin Toyota Prius was stolen not too long ago. The auto trade, federal and state legislatures and regulators should make a holistic effort to curb this crime.

Auto producers have to be required to cowl converters with shields. They have to etch VIN numbers onto every one. Toyota and different producers whose automobiles are particularly focused have to be required to recall such automobiles to put in shields at no proprietor expense. Scrap steel sellers have to be investigated and held accountable for buying stolen converters. Similar goes for the businesses that buy the valuable metals. Auto insurers have to be required to cowl the price of shields when new converters are being put in. Native legislation enforcement should take this crime severely and pursue the crime rings that have interaction in converter theft. I might go on.

I really feel as if I had been robbed twice: first, when somebody not too long ago stole the catalytic converter from our Prius and, once more, when an auto mechanic worth gouged $895 for simply the labor to switch and set up a defend on the brand new catalytic converter.
